I have designed a crocheted trilobite. More to the point, I have hurled another speck of dust in humanity's fight against the grim monster of entropy. No really, work with me here.

We hear about Culture (big C). DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa. Not much said about Uncle Jeff painting a mural at the local coffeeshop. Or grandma's stuffed cabbage. Your roommate independently discovered how to make a screwdriver with Everclear and Tang but it never made the science books. Hey, no one said culture was only composed of good ideas. Culture (little c, anthropology style) is What People Do. Unless we get a whole lot better at space travel it'll all blow up when the Sun goes red giant anyway, but in the meantime we're all working on this together. Hence, it behooves us to throw out a contribution now and then. (A contribution to advance space travel would be particularly useful under the circumstances.)

I am not a Great Works kind of person. I write technology marketing collateral for the money and the laughs (at least the money's good). I write sketch comedy for the laughs and not the money (I am not stupid). I taught a few people to juggle this summer. I "taught" someone dulcimer in the only way I have ever taught dulcimer -- I tuned it up, put it in her lap, showed her the scale, and left the room -- when I came back 10 minutes later she was playing dulcimer. I love dulcimers. When the rain is drizzling and everything seems futile, I keep coming back to the fact that, in fitfully small ways, I manage now and then to plant a seed. Memo to self: plant more seeds.

Most of my friends are also creators of Modest Works. Some aspire to Major Works, but I admire them all. Cheers to everyone, fellow bloggers.
