A good day of incidental birding
Aug. 31st, 2011 12:23 pmOur last drive to DeKalb included a stop at the Aurora outlet mall and a not-bad collection of bird sightings out the car window.
Northern Harrier Hawk on top of a dead tree near the Kane-DeKalb border
Great Blue Heron in Kane County
Three Great Egrets at the outlet mall
Snowy Egret off at the far side of the pond trying to hunt without interference from the Great Egrets
Mallards, Mallards, Mallards
And a bunch of Tiger Swallowtails (not exactly "birding")
While surfing the birding sites to identify the Harrier (all I knew at the time was that it wasn't a Redtail), I learned that Great White Herons are now Great Egrets. Who decided this? Was it a power grab by the Great Blues?
