A little trouble on the Eisenhower Expressway and the Blue Line L this morning.  Not to mention the freight line.  It's nice to have a canal through Oak Park, really classes up the joint.

We live close enough to the fondly-named "Eisenhower Canyon" that normally there's a fair amount of expressway noise, not noticeable indoors with the windows closed but a constant companion when we're outdoors.  Today, the Ike is silent.  And on the back porch I can hear all the neighbors.  And of course that means they can hear us.  I think I prefer the Ike.

We were scheduled to take our younger daughter to Naperville. We got off the TriState at Irving Park because the tollway was a parking lot. Irving Park west of Mannheim was closed because of flooding. Mannheim south was under construction. Grand west was flooded. We finally gave up, made our way to River Road and got back on the TriState northbound in Rosemont. The Des Plaines River was often within inches of Des Plaines River Road.

Big thunderstorms over night. Similar to the ones that closed Mitchell Field in Milwaukee on Wednesday (and dropped 8 inches).

Rain. Lots and lots of rain. And being downstream from Wisconsin which also had lots and lots (and incidentally lots) of rain. Plus, construction on the Ike has screwed up its drainage system so that less epic rains (like we had in June) were still able to close the Ike for a few hours.

We tried to drive west late Saturday afternoon, got off the Ike to avoid a tie-up and wound up in axle-deep water through much of Maywood and Bellwood.

Lake Street was ok for crossing the Des Plaines but man, that water's high. I was wondering about River Road, thanks for the report.

Also Mannheim south was closed somewhere south of there at least part of the day. Lawrence east of there was flooded under the Wisconsin Central yard.

I ran into all that (they'd opened the access gate to Lawrence at the toll plaza just north of Irving Park Rd., so I took that, after going through the gate); I was trying to get to Mokena, where my storage locker is located.

I finally ended up on Green Street in Bensenville, on my way to I-355, after about 90 minutes of trial and error. It must have taken more than 3 hours total to get there.

On the way home, I ended up blocked a time or two around Westchester near Cermak Rd.

Ah, that was why they wouldn't let us on the Ike this afternoon. We were driving from the west suburbs to help friends rescue books from their flooded basement. Normal travel time: 45 minutes; today's travel time: 3 hours.
