The 7 Stages of Autumn Acceptance
Sep. 28th, 2009 06:19 pm1. Get dressed with long pants and long-sleeved shirt.
2. Put on a hoodie.
3. Pull up the hood.
4. Remove shawl from back of chair and wrap around shoulders.
5. Make a pot of tea.
6. Heat oven to 375 degrees and bake a cake.
7. Give up and turn on the furnace.
Side benefit of Stage 7: The Cat finally stops climbing onto your lap and goes to sleep on the radiator. The Other Cat stops trying to stick his head into the cake mixing bowl and goes to see what the First Cat is doing. Unfortunately, First Cat is back and helping me type. You can't win them all.

Date: 2009-09-29 04:05 pm (UTC)1. Old house
2. Not winterized yet (shrink wrap the windows in September?)
3. Internal house temp at 5 in the afternoon: 59 and dropping
4. Predicted low overnight: 45 degrees with wind gusts over 40 mph
5. Elderly ferret who shivers when it's warm
I considered bringing Skye into our bed overnight (where the cats were, not like we invited them) but at her age she has, um, bladder control issues. Hence my choices: dead ferret, ferret pissing the bed, try to rig some deal with a heating pad (not recommended and I'm not sure we have a heating pad) or turn on furnace. Thermostat is now set at 64. We do what we have to do.
OTOH, the house does not have central air because it was built in 1923 and designed for reasonable comfort in hot weather. Once we get the storm windows and the shrink wrap and the weatherstripping in place we'll be good to go for the next seven months. How depressing. Better concentrate on yarn and Christmas cookies and ignore everything else. Mmm, Christmas cookies...
