Newts and Spoilers

Back when Moebius did R.U.R. at Chicon V, Lo these many years ago, I read Karel Capek's novel War With The Newts.  I thought the novel was a better exploration of the same theme.  There were historical/cultural reasons to go with R.U.R. (the first use of the word "robot") and of course R.U.R. was written as a play whereas Newts would have required adaptation for the stage.

So I was interested to see this on Metromix this morning:

Next Theatre:  War With The Newts:  A multimedia adaptation--with puppets--of Karel Capek's 1936 dark fantasy novel about the discovery of an intelligent race of giant salamanders, which humanity enslaves for profit and national advantage.

To which I say what my sainted late mother once said to me about another dramatic presentation, thus absolutely ruining me for a certain scene in Alien when I saw it the week after she did:   Beany and Cecil.

In Mad Magazine it was Kermit the Frog.

Ooh, Kermit would make a great newt! I always thought he looked more like an anole than a frog anyway.
