Archie gets all lit up for the holidays
Dec. 17th, 2012 05:43 pmThat's no moon... it's a banjo uke!

Archie the Firefly got all lit up for the holidays. Which I trust many of you will be, too. But unlike most of you, Archie is scheduled to appear on the WGN-TV news Wednesday night.
I had a Clever Idea at uke club two weeks ago and stupidly promised to follow through with it for the Giant Over-Planned Party last Thursday. Plan A (simply stuff the LED string inside the banjo head) did not work because anything touching the skin ruins the sublime sound of a banjo uke. Plan B involved cardboard from a nearby Amazon box and masking tape to hold lights, cardboard, and battery pack in place. Not an elegant design, but one that would cause no damage to Archie. And could be executed in 10 minutes.

The party, hosted by the second and more frenetic ukulele club in the Harrison Street Arts District, was attended by a Chicago WGN-TV cameraman and by anchor Steve Sanders, who admitted to playing guitar so we got a baritone uke into his hands and he acquited himself very well indeed. The story is scheduled to air on this Wednesday's evening news. Which I will not be watching because my in-laws are hosting an early Festivus dinner Wednesday night and family comes first. Never a dull moment.
