Nailed It

This fall, Larry will enter the Jazz Studies program at Northern Illinois University (NIU).  He has been accepted into Willie Pickens' piano studio and he will seek a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance.  Then, of course, he will move back into our basement.  But in the meantime he will have learned a great deal about playing jazz and maybe... just maybe... something about making a living as a musician.

The wave function has now collapsed.  On behalf of Schrodinger's Cat and the rest of the crew, we hope you had a pleasant stay in Limbo.  Please check the area around your seat for any belongings and be careful as you exit the black box.  Have a nice day.

I'm glad you have a resolution. Uncertainty sucks. And, I'm very glad that the facritter confirmed Larry's talent. Yay, Larry! And, if you ever figure out what to do with a Japanese giant robot expert, let me know...

Umm... video game designer? (like that's an easy job for paying gigs) Comics store owner? Write a book to sell to other Japanese giant robot experts (we know they're out there)? Must be something. Maybe he'd be inspired to learn Japanese?

We know we're lucky that one of Larry's obsessive areas of deep arcane knowledge is marketable. I think it helps that, from a very early age, he has sought applause. Wonder where he gets that?

I must say, after touring a lot of jazz studies programs, that jazz piano is as autistic a body of knowledge as anything in the world. Like computer programming, train spotting and chess, this is no place for a neurologically typical brain.

Thank goodness, because openings for K'Nex building experts are few and far between.

Congratulations to Larry! And I hope he gets lots of chances to play for pay in the coming years.

He has a paying gig tomorrow night. Another in two weeks. And he's helping teach a jazz improv class to middle schoolers over the summer. The problem isn't finding paying gigs -- it's finding enough paying gigs. But that's what day jobs are for.

Congrats to Larry. He's in for a great ride.
